Carrot Cake - I finally get the point

Carrot Cake - I finally get the point
4 September 2013

Carrot Cake – it’s always been a bit of a mystery to me.  A sticky issue if you like.  As quite frankly I don’t see the point???  Surely pudding, a dessert, hell even cake, should incorporate chocolate at some or other stage?  Is that not the whole purpose?  It’s reason for existing?

And therefore a cake or loaf with carrots as a key ingredient, just seems ever so slightly off to me.  Like you’re being duped into taking veggies.  Sort of tricked into it if you like.  No wait!  I’ve got it!  It’s a con.  Most likely a veggie conspiracy too.

Now don’t get me wrong.  Personally, I’m quite fond of the humble carrot.  If it’s good enough for bunnies, it’s good enough for me.  That’s my motto.  Which doesn’t mean that I share the same sentiments about bunny pellets per se.  That’s a different matter (quite literally) all together.  However, if I wanted to eat a carrot, I’d peel one and dig right in.  What’s-Up-Doc-style.  Alternatively, I’d cook it, or add it to a salad.  But trying to camouflage it unsuccessfully in a cake?  It just simply won’t cut it.  Though technically, I think they grate it.

My aunt proudly sent a pic last night, of the pudding she was having, which included a pic of, yip you guessed it, Carrot Cake.  I immediately pointed out, the error of her ways.  It’s a veggie.  It’s unnatural.  It’s wrong.

But, she floored me with her instant comeback.

“It’s a vegetable with icing on”.

Now to be fair, that changes the whole thing altogether.  Right!  Time for a radical recalculate on the whole Carrot Cake issue.

And what with me being a woman or cognitive means (sort of), it naturally sent my thoughts drifting. Because what it all boils down to, is the slant you give it.  The selling point, if you like.  Giving something a different name or term, quite often enables one to open up your mind to a whole host of new possibilities.

In the same vein, my kids will no longer wear my hand-me-downs of really cool clothes from older friends or siblings.  Instead they will be recycling clothing.  Even upcycling if you like.  Cole’s designer Levi’s he got from a friend, will now turn into a trendy pair of second-owner-jeans.  Catch my drift?  It’s more environmentally friendly and kind to the planet too.

Still I suppose one can possibly push this too far.  No matter how I coat it, Brussel Sprouts are never going to go down well with my kids.  Whether it be covered in chocolate sauce, or liberally sprinkled with sprinkles.  And for once I have to agree.  It is a most dubious vegetable.  Never to be accidently ingested.

And so basically I think that the moral of the story, is that words can occasionally be misleading.  Carrot Cake is still Carrot Cake.  Not to be trusted.

However, if covered with bacon bits and a rich cheese sauce, I might have to reconsider.

  1. I am SO with you and your kids on the brussels sprouts!! Yuk!! Something went horribly wrong there! But yes- we need to be creative with food! Crisps are made of potatoes afterall - they can't be THAT bad for you. Cakes are made with eggs and milk - and we all know eggs and milk are good for you. Cocoa contains flavanoids linked to certain health benefits linked to coronary heart disease and stroke ( how EXACTLY is still under debate), and of course there's sugar - and we ALL know that sugar gives you energy and GO - and apart from Cole, we all need GO!! So bring on the crisps, cake, chocolate and sugar!!
