Thea, that curler and James Bond

Thea, that curler and James Bond
10 August 2014

So last week Friday afternoon, my friend Thea and I were sitting at the Barnyard Theatre, watching the final dress rehearsal, before our daughters were due to grace the dancing stage, the following day.

And Thea was grumbling.  Her husband had just phoned her, round about lunch time, to say, “Oh by the way – I forgot to tell you.  We’ve got to go to a fancy black tie work doo tonight.  And the theme is 007, James Bond.”

He was a clearly a dead man walking.  One with a death wish to boot.  Practically begging for it.

But darling Thea, took it all in her stride.  Only leaving the theatre at about 5pm.  Braving the horrendous Friday afternoon traffic.  She eventually got home, and had about half an hour to bath, choose an appropriately smart, knock-out outfit, do her hair, make-up, and sort out her kids for the night.  A near impossible feat.  But Thea tends to operate in crises management mode, most of the time.  And I’m not entirely convinced she wouldn’t have left it all for the last minute in any rate.

Anyway, she rushed through it all, and managed to pull a cat out of the hat.  Looking absolutely amazing!  Simply gorgeous!

She says she was tottering on dangerously high heels.  Cleavage popping out.  Daring slit in her skirt, all the way up to her thigh.  Looking seriously sexy.

They got out of their car, with Thea clinging to her husband Garth’s arm, to help her stay upright and not fall flat on her face in her heels.

Apparently the venue was stunning!  Décor to match the James Bond theme.  Sort of a dramatic black tunnel type thing, with all of the guests walking through it.  Photo booth set up with a professional photographer, taking pics of all the dolled up guests.  Cameras clicking away.

They posed, oohed and aahed.  Got their required, “Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred”.  Mingled and chatted to Garth’s bosses and colleagues.  Making small talk, and appropriately complimenting people on their smashing, ever-so-dashing outfits.  Accepting similar compliments in return.

Eventually about half an hour later, they were chatting to a work friend, who also happened to be the DJ for the night.  Just relaxing, and soaking up the ever-so-sauve-and-stylish event.  And the novelty of having a dress-up occasion.  I believe Thea was marvelling over her ability, to pull it all together, with very short notice.

When Garth casually glanced over at her and said,

“Thea!!!  You’ve still got a bloody curler in your hair!”.  (To be fair – those were apparently not his exact words.  But I’m exercising poetic license.  Cause his exact words are not repeatable.  To a polite audience.  Even a not so polite audience.)

And then, much to Thea’s horror, she realised that it was indeed so.  She only has one curler, mind you.  A light blue one of course.  And in her effort to look ever so glamorous, she quickly popped it into her hair, just before they left, so that her hair would lie just so.  Looking perfect, once removed.

But therein lies the catch – once removed.

She says just before they left home, she asked Garth how she looked.  And he said she looked fantastic!  (To be fair – those were apparently not his exact words.  But I’m exercising poetic licence.  Cause his exact words are not repeatable.  To a polite audience.  Even a not so polite audience.)  Suffice it to say, he was well pleased that his wife looked the part.  Real Bond-girl material.

Apparently they were near hysterical with laughter.  Though I’m sure she was terribly miffed with Garth-The-Observant, too.  They guffawed and practically rolled around.  The DJ friend, was beyond help.  Completely doubled over.  Uncontrollable laughter.

Quite predictably she was mortified.  Not only had her “Dear Husband” not noticed, he’d clearly not looked properly when she’d asked him either.

And she had confidently spoken to many a fellow guest.  Her husband’s employer, for goodness sake!  Just imagine what they were thinking.  She’d paused and posed for numerous photos.  Assuming she looked dashing, elegant, and at her very best.

She even asked the photographer, “Why didn’t you tell me!!!”.  To which he replied, “I just get paid to take photos”.  What a guy!

We got a WhatsApp message on our Twisted friend group, the morning after the shindig.  And none of us could believe it.  Was she joking?  Was it even possible?  More importantly, where was the photographic evidence?

Naturally I laughed like anything.  But then I thought to myself, “You know if it’s to the back of her hair, it probably wasn’t very noticeable”.  I was also sure someone would’ve told her if it was really obvious.  Maybe one of the fellow wives?

Anyway, we’ve been teasing her about it for a week.  And I remember saying to her, “Was it really obvious?”.  To which she replied, “Hello!  My hair is blonde.  The curler is blue.  It was in the front.”

And then on Friday night, us chicks went out for a birthday meal, and Thea handed over the evidence.  Professional photos, taken on the night.

There are no words.  Sadly, I only thought of taking pics of the reactions of the other girls, a bit late.  Still, you can see the hysterical laughter.  The utter disbelief.

Thea Day you are truly unique.  And God Bless your Garth.  He’s braver than me.

And I repeat what I said to you on Friday night – at least it matches your eyes.  You looked stunning doll!

Please click and LIKE on Facebook - Thanx!

Only Thea would do this - sooooo funny! Close up shot of the curler.

Gail and Karyn simply can't believe their eyes

How is this even possible???

Too funny! Actually unbelievable!

I have greater social needs than my husband

I have greater social needs than my husband
2 September 2013

It can be said, that I have far greater social needs than my husband.

Because while he is quite happy to be the king of his Castle and stay home rather a lot and rule over his empire, I require just a little bit more.

It’s not so much that I’m a great social butterfly.  Or demand to be out and about on the town.  In fact, far from it.  However, I do need outside input, from women in particular.

I think this can be traced back to women, in general, who tend to be more sociable.  Men are more nuclear and self-soothing if you like.

Even just seeing my friends, while we’re waiting outside school, to collect our sprogs, is good for my soul.  For a brief few minutes, we’re given the opportunity to connect.  To uplift each other.  To bloody-well talk!  Inevitably, it always involves laughing.  Usually a quick hug and a kiss too.  It’s knowing that someone out there cares about you.  Knows what’s happening in your life.  And yes, the reverse is also true.  As you care about them, and know what’s happening in their lives too.

Phone calls are also marvellous for this very same purpose.  You get to expend some of your daily word quota, and share a bit of what’s happening in your life and in theirs.  And I indulge in this regularly.  In fact daily, as I am blessed with wonderful women in my family, who also fulfil this vital role.  And I have many other fantastic friends too.

My Twisted Sista’s and I, see each other fairly regularly.  Some of us have kids in the same Primary School.  Some in the same High School.  Some go to the same dancing studio.  Some, not any of the aforementioned.  Yet we live in a small-ish town, therefore we still bump into each other.  Just seeing them soothes my soul and lifts my spirits.

They are the family, that I had a hand in picking.  The one I chose for myself.  Their kids are like my own.  I know their parents, their siblings and their other friends too.  I can pop in uninvited and make myself a nice cuppa coffee.  I can open their cupboards and reach into their fridge, and for them the same is true of my home.

We are there for each other, in the daily and the mundane.  Through broken geysers, flooding, kids in hospital, operations, lifting and carting each other’s kids around, supporting one another in any way possible.  The death of parents, cars breaking down, moving homes, job losses, and job gains, financial highs and lows.  Marital ones too.  Basically, we’ve got each other’s back.

We’ve got a cell phone group, which provides much fodder for laughter, and so the six of us Twisted’s can “chat” via our phones.  Our husbands have admitted that the constant pinging is a bit of a disturbance at times, as the verbal volleys can fly back and forth for ages.  Sharp and pithy little one liners, usually accompanied by wittily appropriate emoticons.  The sense of humour is wicked and naughty.  And it lightens up my life.  The other day, a “quick” little chat, required 39 WhatsApp messages flying through cyberspace.  What fun!

I’m so grateful for my bonus Twisted family.  They bring meaning, colour, depth, support, humour and love to my world.

Viva Twisted Sista’s!  Viva!

My top twelve favourite presents

My top twelve favourite presents
14 June 2013

Presents are awesome!  Don't believe anyone who tries to tell you otherwise.  Nobody can resist their allure.  The way they make you feel special, shallow though that may appear.  They have the power to make you feel cherished and valued.  Appreciated and cared for.  I have received very many incredible presents, but a few stand out.  And stand out by far.

  1. When I was pregnant with Cole, I was given an amazing baby shower by my family and friends.  And I was just so very touched.  Having a baby shower is a part of the pregnancy ritual and makes the whole "baby-being-born-soon-thing" seem very real.  At my baby shower I got such awesome goodies for Cole and I.  From baby food, clothes, blankets, wet wipes and disposable nappies to lotions and potions for me.  But nothing ever compared with the brilliance of the gift from my mom.  It was just so unique.  So Maggie-ish and different.  Rather than giving me some more baby paraphernalia, she gave me a R200 gift voucher for kiddies meals at McDonalds.  This was truly inspired.  At the time, Luke was six and Amber was two and a half.  They loved McDonalds and for them it was an awesome treat.  For me too, as it allowed me the luxury of not worrying about cooking a meal for them and furthermore, they felt so special when they got take-aways.  And nearly nine years ago, R200 was a lot of money.  It worked out to sixteen Happy Meals in total, in other words eight joint meal times between the two of them.  It was perfection!  So thoughtful and different and I just loved it!
  2. Us Twisted Sista's have a tradition.  When it is the birthday of someone in the group, we pool money together.  We throw it in a pot and then rather than getting ten Vanilla bubble bath bottles from Woollies, we rather get one big, awesome present.  Usually something you really, really want, but don't end up buying for yourself.  Hinting about what you would like to get is very much allowed.  Perhaps a new pair of boots or a snazzy handbag.  Something you've been lusting after for a while.  And so, one year for my birthday, the Twisted's came up with a rather novel idea.  Rather than spending the loot for my birthday on one present, they pooled the money and the chicks and I went for a horse ride on Noordhoek Beach.  It was so beautiful, it was almost surreal.  Utterly magical and charming and I simply loved every single minute.  So thoughtful and kind, it blew me away.  Could anything be better?  Well, the cake and coffee we went for afterwards, was pretty awesome too.
  3. 3) The first time my sister, Foefie, and her husband did a stint in England, she sent me a random present of a few of the Queen's very own sterling pounds.  It was for no special occasion.  No rhyme or reason.  Simply because she could.  And she knew it would make me feel special and spoilt.  It wasn't for my birthday.  Nor for Xmas either.  If I remember correctly it was about £40, which converted a few years ago, turned into a lot of South African rands.  Such a special treat as it was all for me, with strict instructions to spend it on me and me alone.  Hunting for just the right goodies to buy, was so thrilling and exciting too.  It felt absolutely sinfully selfish to splurge it all on me.  Such fun!  And then funny enough a very, very dear and good friend of mine who lives in Switzerland, once also gave me some Swiss Francs with similar instructions.  I had to get some spoil pressies just for me.  I delighted in the challenge of finding just the right things.  So awesome!
  4. One of the last paintings my Dad ever did was so gloriously beautiful, it simply took my breath away.  I loved it with a passion and remember seeing it on his easel and watching it unfurl right in front of me.  But the painting was a gift to an old family friend, Linky.   Almost a commission of sorts.  In exchange for a new duvet set, bought on Linky's Woollies account, my dad would make this painting for her.  And then a few years ago, out of the blue, Linky phoned me up one fine day and told me that she would like me to have this painting.  That she felt it was meant for me, not for her.  And that it would give her greater joy, if she knew that I had it.  I resisted and tried with all of my might to dissuade her, but she wouldn't be moved.  Her mind was made up.  And so, one of my Dad's most magnificent paintings became mine.  My uncle kindly framed it for me and it has pride of place in my study, right above my computer.  And I gaze upon it daily and marvel at its beauty and my good fortune in receiving such an incredible gift.
  5. On my birthday, on the 10th of January 1997, just nine short months after we got married, Grant told me that he would like us to start trying for a baby.  I had been ready for a baby from the second we got married.  It had been my biggest wish simply for ever.  My whole life to be exact.  And so for Grant to deem it do-able and to give his seal of approval was probably my best birthday gift ever.  A dream come true.  I remember floating for the rest of that day.  In fact days thereafter too.  And so auditions for our firstborn child began in all earnestness.  Though to be truthful, we were practically still on honeymoon, and auditions were coming along rather nicely on their own too…..
  6. I absolutely love surprises.  No wait.  Let me qualify.  I love happy surprises.  Good ones.  That bring delight and not despair.  And all of my baby showers as well as my kitchen tea, came as a huge surprise.  I fell for it every single time.  Everyone was so thoughtful and faffed lots.  Such a delicious treat!  One I can highly recommend.  Furthermore, it’s as good an excuse as any to get pregnant again…..
  7. A few years ago, an incredible friend, gifted Grant and I with a trip to Singapore and China.  I know!  How ridiculous is that!  There are simply no words to describe how amazing it was.  I had never, ever travelled anywhere and was a real greenie.  Quite naturally, I took to it immediately and loved every single minute.  It felt a bit like me head was exploding.  How could it not?  Imagine going from the Strand in the Western Cape, to Beijing.  Sure, my head felt like it exploded.  I was barely able to take it all in!
  8. My Grantie has given me many, many awesome, magnificent, gloriously beautiful presents over the years.  He's given me clothes and jewellery (I managed to squeeze him from two engagement rings – hah!).  Things for our home.  Trinkets I rejoice in and special treats just for me.  Three absolutely perfect kids.  Yet, one of the very best gifts he ever gave me, was a roll of double ply toilet paper.  I know it might sound odd, but for reasons I don't particularly want to go into, it reduced me to tears of joy and gratitude as well as an absolute overwhelming outpouring of love for him.  Blindingly hot and pure.  At that moment it meant more to me than even my kids.  Nothing could have made me love him more.  I know – I’m a bit of an oddball at times.  Whenever we talk about it, Grant still shakes his head.  He’s convinced I’m loopy.  Hey, I think he got off lucky.  See how easy I am to please?  Show me another woman who’ll value the same gifts that I do.
  9. I remember turning seven years old and having a birthday party at Cloetenberg.  My grandparents were doing a stint in Durban and we were living in the house at the time.  As a present, one of my friends gave me a huge, big, shiny R1 coin.  I had never felt so rich.  In fact, no matter how much money I have accumulated since that very same day, and even if I added it all together, I would still not be able to emulate that same feeling of wealth.  It was the equivalents of millions in my eyes.  I admired it often and couldn’t believe how enormous it was.  Still it fit perfectly in my hand.
  10. When I was twelve, my grandparents (Dad’s mom and dad), gave me a shiny blue bicycle.  I thought I had died and gone to heaven.  I remember the exhilarating rush of freedom I experienced, in scooting all over the place.  Unlike my loser of a brother, who had to walk to school, I had me some wheels.  Beat that!  It was huge to me.  We lived in safer times, and hence I was allowed to use my bicycle riding around wherever I wanted to go.  Visiting friends, cycling to school, going to the village (begging to do errands just so that I could go on my bike), etc.  And in terms of freedom, it meant even more than my first set of car wheels.
  11. I don’t think there are enough words to describe my love of Christmas and all things Christmas related.  Some might even call it a bit of an obsession.  I just LOVE it!!!  And so, quite per chance, I happened upon a Jim Shore Heartwood Creek Father Christmas statue.  The detail is magnificent.  The colours rich.  I love their old-wordly and classic feel.  Their timeless beauty.  Grant immediately understood how I felt.  I think my face gave it away.  And so, I acquired my first one.  A beauty of note.  And subsequently, my collection has grown rather rapidly.  Sadly they are rather pricey, and so I have become adept at find them at knock-off bargain prices with the help of, amongst others, my aunt.  They beautify my home and are proudly displayed, all year long.  They cheer me up and though inanimate, they bring me joy, with whispers of Christmas’s past and future.
  12. In November 2003, I remember feeling ever so slightly off.  Like something was just out of kilter.  I was unbearably tired, and would nod off all the time.  My body didn’t quite feel like it belonged to me.  Eventually, on Grant’s urging, I went off to the doctor, and explained to him how I was feeling.  He asked me if there was any chance that I could be pregnant.  I laughed in his face.  We certainly weren’t trying to fall pregnant.  Grant had decreed long ago that our family was complete at two children.  Amber was not even two yet, and we had to resort to fertility treatment to fall pregnant with her.  Still he insisted on doing a pregnancy test, and I recall feeling ridiculously nervous, yet hopeful at the same time, whilst I was waiting with his assistant in the bathroom, as she was doing the test.  And when those magical little lines appeared on the pregnancy test, announcing that I was indeed with child, I gave a giddy little laugh and jumped up and down and squeezed her so tight.  My dream had come true – a third baby was on the way!!!  And then just to make super sure, I went for a blood test too.  Positive too.  Could there be any greater gift, than a much longed for child?  And so we became blessed with our little Cole.  A charming and delightful little boy, who turns nine in just a few sleeps.  The very best gift ever.  Though to be truthful, the surprised delight in Cole’s arrival was twofold.  Because apart from getting my heart’s desire of a third baby, another rather unexpected present was seeing Grant’s face when I told him.  He turned a whiter shade of pale, and immediately phoned my mom and said to her, “You won’t believe what Helene’s gone and done”.  Men!!!  I kept on reminding him that this was definitely not a solo achievement!
I have received so many amazing, incredible, thoughtful gifts.  Kindnesses that have been shown to me.  Letters and special cards.  And they all were precious to me.  Each and every one.  But just perhaps, my top twelve stands out the most.  Thank you one and all for spoiling me so much!

These gifts all meant so much, because with them, you gifted me a little piece of your heart.  And those sentiments have warmed my heart too.  Thanx!

I never felt quite as rich as when I got that shiny new R1 coin

Horse riding with my Twisted Sista's on Noordhoek Beach - sublime!

I know! Can you friggin believe it! That's little old me on the Great Wall of China - totally surreal! I swore I could smell History that day. It was like a physical presence in the air.

Yeehaaa!!!  Pregnant again!

Some lovely dosh!

I know - I can wax lyrical about the whole two-ply thing.

Aaahhh!!! I particularly love the birdie Father Christmas with the bird houses on his cloak-thingy. Arms stretched out wide. Magnificent!

A few more of my Jim Shore Father Christmas little statues - I adore them! Aren't they just so charming?

The Great Scavenger Hunt

The Great Scavenger Hunt
15 April 2013

Have you ever been to a scavenger hunt party?  Because if you haven’t, you’re seriously missing out.

So exactly what is a scavenger hunt party?  Well, let me explain.

What happens is that someone sets a series of tasks for you.  Completely and utterly unrelated random things that have to collected within a certain space of time.  Things that are nearly impossible to get.

A few years ago, we had quite a few of them.  I think in total I went to about four.  And I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one.  My first one was arranged by the wife of an old school friend of Grant’s, many years ago.  It was such fun and made such a huge impression on me, that I told my Twisteds about it.  It didn’t take long for us Sista’s and partners to do a scavenger hunt party too.  In fact, we did a few of them.

We had one friend, who loved organising and arranging.  In fact, she loved it so much, that she got more enjoyment from the actual planning and arranging bit of the party.  Which is just as well, because the person who arranges the party, can’t actually take part in the end.

Her job was to set us a series of tasks.  All of us met at her house at a designated time.  We were divided into teams of four or five, given a task sheet as well as one hour to collect all of the items on our list.  Though some things on our list, were rather cryptic and involved quite a bit of lateral thinking, figuring the clues out.  There were even some trivia questions included.

And what with me being a scavenger hunt veteran, I can offer this advice.  Arrange to have a few people outside of the scavenger hunt party to be on alert so that they can help you.  Husbands and wives are always split up.  In this team divide, ensure that you are the one in possession of your house keys, because chances are that you might have some of the items on your list at your very own home.  Ensure that your cell phone is charged so that you can make calls to this same set of people on standby, getting them to collect goodies for you.

However, at times, these preventative measures were foiled.  Occasionally, we were asked to hand in our house keys and cell phones as well.  And on every occasion that I did a scavenger hunt party, we were never allowed to take money along.  These tasks may not involve money changing hands.  Beg, borrow and steal?  Apparently yes.  Paying for stuff?  Definitely not.

And I would like to share with you examples of some of the things I have had to collect over the years:
  • A t-bone steak bone – went to all the steak houses, and restaurants and had to go    through their bins for the scraps – charming!
  • A fish knife – I am still in possession of one from the Strand Spur – sorry!
  • A For Sale sign board – take note, that an On Show sign board will simply not do - quite a few teams, missed this little nuance difference and lost valuable points in the process
  • A car hubcap
  • A piece of knitting, comprising twenty rows of twenty stitches (they counted these meticulously at the end)
  • Swimming a length of the Beaumont pool ( I.  Nearly.  Died.  Swimming is not my forte, furthermore, it was freezing cold, and I could obviously not wear my glasses.  I didn’t know where I was, or where I was going and managed to get water up my nose, ears, mouth, etc.  Too terrible for words!)
  • A shopping trolley race (I was pushed along a length of the parking lot at the Mall by a fellow team mate – we won!!!)
  • A red pair of panties
  • A white rose
  • A used golf score card
  • An unused Lotto ticket, for that particular date – remember, no money, so you have to beg a random stranger to buy one for you
  • A 2l cool drink bottle filled with sea water, including a piece of floating seaweed – they test whether it is fresh or not, so you simply can’t fill up from your tap at home
  • On one occasion, each team had to compose and perform a rap song, using the words, “A chicken is a chicken, but a chicken is a man” – there are no words to describe this one
  • A raunchy movie – one friend, who has a very, very, very conservative wife, used her Stax video card to take out an x-rated movie on her account – she nearly died taking it back again and was mortified
  • Climbing up the climbing wall at the Mall, including strapping into harnesses, wearing safety helmets, etc. – it was friggin high!!!
  • An empty tequila bottle – yip, had to go into a whole bunch of bars and go through their bins too
  • One of Shakespeare’s works
  • A take-away menu
  • Chopsticks
  • A Balbinella plant
  • A Pizza take-away box
  • A Christmas tree
  • A Popcorn box from the movies
  • Fish bones
  • A light bulb
  • An avocado
  • A live snail
  • Hair curlers
  • A brick
  • A raw egg
  • A South African flag

So, as you can see, many, many arbitrary, random things.  Things with no relation to each other, that usually necessitates the need for numerous pit stops.  Many items that won’t be found in the average home and that require a fair bit of begging, borrowing and on the odd occasion, even stealing.  Because to be fair, I’m not entirely sure that all of those “For Sale” signboards were ever returned.  I, for one am still in possession of a fish knife from the Strand Spur.  Though to be honest, it was given to me willingly.  After I begged them.  I just somehow never quite got round to taking it back again.  Sadly the Lotto ticket, didn’t produce any winning numbers.  And the person who’s golf score card we got, had clearly played a really bad game.

But one particular Scavenger Hunt comes to mind, when I think of these fun evenings racing around like lunatics.  On this occasion, part of our crowd of friends, partaking in the fun, was an African-American couple.  No, seriously.  He was African and she was American.  In fact, she was African-American.  And somehow even the African man was more American than African.  If memory serves, his family had been exiled in America during the Apartheid years, and therefore just like his beautiful wife, he too had an American accent.

One of the items on the list of requirements, was a white rose.  And for this team in particular, it was one of the last items that they needed before completing their list, within the time frame at hand.  And just like that, whilst driving out and about, they saw a garden, overflowing with beautiful white rose bushes.  The driver of this team, quickly pulled to the side, and everyone beseeched the African man, to quickly run and grab the rose.  To take one for his team.  He was closest to the side of the garden and it made logical sense for him to simply leap out of the car, pinch a rose and off they would go.  But, huge was his team’s surprise when he point blank refused.  In fact, I think they were baffled by his refusal.  Especially given the fact that he was such a team player.  However, upon inquiring as to his reluctance, he admitted, that no force on earth could propel him, a black man, to hop over the fence of a house, in an affluent, predominantly white area, to steal a rose.  It was very funny.  Because he clearly had a point.  And in the end, one of the ladies, did the dirty deed.

Now said man’s wife, was in a different team.  And she was the co-pilot for her team.  Reading out instructions and the like.  And for this particular scavenger hunt, one of the items required was a Harry Potter novel.  And so when her team stopped at a team mate’s house to ransack anything they could get, she shouted off a list of items, and immediately ticked them off as completed.  It was only much later in the evening, when the scavenger hunt was completed, all teams had returned and the unbiased “judge”, went through everyone’s loot, that a lonesome little bottle of spices was unearthed.  Why?  How?  What was the reason for its inclusion?  No item on the list called for spices.

Until closer inspection revealed that the spice in the bottle was Curry Powder.  And then the penny dropped.  Spoken in her twangy, broad American accent, to her team mate, her instructions for “Harry Potter”, sounded just like “Curry Powder”.

It provided many a laugh.  But those were not the only laughs.  Not by a long shot.  The one year, we had to dress in bad taste, and all of us looked like trailer trash.  We had to go running right through the Mall, dressed hideously.  Furthermore, running into a bar, looking like hooker, begging for an empty Tequila bottle, was probably not my best moment either.

Scavenger hunts – highly recommended.  The adrenaline rush is awesome.  The feeling of team camaraderie incredible too.  The laughs numerous.  The tales afterwards hilarious.

But most of all, the memories – unbelievable!

In fact, I think it’s time for another one…..

And so, just to be safe, best I stock up on some random objects.  Just for in case.  Like a crayfish in the freezer, a chicken wish bone, a For Rent sign board, a motorbike side view mirror, a pool cue, an old telephone directory, a movie ticket stub, a purple bra, a pair of ballet points, swimming goggles, etc.  You simply never know.

Grant, Thando and Thea - getting in the zone before the start - cocktails all round

Gill, proudly showing off our loot - we were in the same team

Gillie and Paul - also in our team - we did good!

Gill showing off our hair curlers - tick!

One of the teams, ensuring that they've got all their goodies - many onlookers, giving them hell

Grant, Katrine, Garth and Fritz were in the same team

Just relaxing during the judging phase

At the time of this scavenger hunt I was about to pop with Cole.  And one of the items on the list, was "Something for baby Cole".  I remember thinking nothing of it, and exclaiming that I had nappies at my house, which we could go and get.  It simply never dawned on me, that the Scavenger Hunt, was also a baby shower.  And therefore "Something for baby Cole", was actually gifts.  How awesome is that!

Admiring my loads of loot!

I simply couldn't believe it - lots of spoils!

Much debate and ragging between teams

In the end, it came down to a down-downs contest.  And Thea was the undisputed winner.  Much to her delight and her husband's disgust.  Too funny!  At times it is hard to remember that we are actually adults.

Clearly this is the start of the "Bad Taste" Scavenger Hunt pics - too dreadful.  And to be fair, we all uglied up pretty well.

I can't decide on what my favourite look is.  Gavin's farm boy look.  Penny's trailer trash look.  Gill's school-girl-gone-wrong look.  And as for Kimbal?  Well, there simply aren't enough words in my vocabulary!

Rinette looking ever so glam - complete with the obligatory tattoos on her arm - very, very mooi!

Rinette - the tart.  Paul - the lost one.  Tootsie - the psychic.  And Gavin - the ???

Perhaps I actually took the cake.  Loved the blue eye shadow - NOT!  Big hoop earrings, lots of leopard print, petticoat hanging out, boots, ciggie in the hand (even though I don't smoke, it added a certain credibility to my look) - and naturally, I had to dress Cole trashy too - poor kid.

The lovely Penny and Paul - such a fun couple

Another Scavenger Hunt

We have been warned, that one of the items on the list, was swimming.  None of us had anticipated the length we would be swimming.  In Beaumont's school pool, if you don't mind!

All ready!

The calm before the frenetic racing starts

Grant and Ian having a chill

Check the towels - all ready to go

Listening to the rules

Nearly ready!

Thea was our knitter - though we also had my neighbour's wife knitting for us too, in case we didn't finish in time, amidst our racing around

Boys in the front, driving like lunatics - Simon and John

Our knitting, looking forlorn amidst a Barbie leg sticking out

Thea's face simply says it all

Gearing up for our trolley race - Lisa and I being pushed

Just before the start of the trolley race and the knitting is going ahead, full steam

Let the racing begin!!!

And just for fun, an egg and spoon race in the parking lot too - broken eggs, equal many lost points

Team mates on the other end, waiting for their eggs

Back at ground zero - waiting for the final leg of the hunt

A kiddies science contraption had to be successfully traversed, without triggering the buzzer

And so the rapping began - this is Gail's very much not happy face

The crowd assembles, waiting for the rapping to begin

JP was the ringmaster for this lot - he was brilliant!

Garth led this troop

JP again - just check out the back to front caps - all part of the rapper image you see

And for this one, Gavin did his thing.  I seriously dig his low-hung pants, with his exposed boxers.  He's got the look down pat.  For extra effect, Rinette, is banging on a pot from the kitchen.

Gavin had the moves like Jagger

And this was my team - seriously dig Simon's attitude - and John, grabbing his gonads - too funny!

Doing our thing - check my chicken wing arms.  I would like to note, that our team won the rapping part of the contest.  Purely though, because the two main judges of the rapping section, were the owners of the largest family owned chain of Kentucky Branches in the country - a friend of ours' parents.  They are fondly called the Colonel and Mrs Colonel.  And in order to aid our winning, we dissed Nando's terribly and promoted KFC.  It was clearly a smart decision.

We won overall!!!  Accepting our prizes and giving an acceptance speech.  What fun!

One of the other teams, doing their rap too.
